April Fools!

Aprils Fools Foods to Fool the Kids!
Hello, everyone!  I asked my sister-in-law, Jodi to do a guest post on her past years April Fool's food.  She always gets her kids good!  Check out her fun ideas below.  Thanks, Jodi!!

Hi there! I'm Angie's sister-in-law, Jodi.  If you are reading this you are lucky enough to have found Angie's blog.  Isn't she amazing, I mean seriously, is it fair for one person to be so stinkin crafty!  But all jealousy aside...I am so glad she started this blog so I can "borrow" her ideas now instead of trying to steal them whenever I am at her house.

So....on to the post....

April Fool's Day is a fun day that I look forward to, not so much because I am a prankster but because I like to make fun foods to trick my kids with.  Family Fun has great ideas in their magazine every year, that is where most of my inspiration comes from.
These "peas" are the first funny food I made for the kids, and my trick worked perfectly.  I have one of those anti-veggie kids and so when I piled some of these on his plate and told all the kids that they couldn't leave the table until their peas were gone he was on the floor pitching a fit.  Then his sister took a bite and let him in on the secret.  These are super easy to make, just a little time consuming.  They are made from green Laffy Taffy's.  You simply cut the taffy into pea sized squares and roll them into a ball with your fingers.
Here are those yummy looking peas paired with a "cupcake".  They will be so excited when you tell them you are having cake for dinner, until they realize it is a mini meatloaf baked in a muffin tin and topped with some colored mashed potatoes.

The next year I took the cupcake idea and turned it into a cake.  I just made the meatloaf in my round cake pans, stacked them and "frosted" them with colored mashed potatoes.

Another Family Fun find...a "drink" made from jell-o. The kids will have fun trying to sip it.

I have also tried this "grilled cheese" sandwich made of toasted pound cake and orange frosting. There is nothing like biting into something expecting savory and getting sweet!

This was a favorite last year.  Found in the book "Hello, Cupcake" by Alan Richardson and Karen Tack. (This book is fabulous by the way, tons of cute ideas!).  The "meatballs" are made from Ferro Rocher candies and the "sauce" is strawberry jam, wish I had known we only had one spoonful of it left in the jar, but you get the idea.

Hope you all get to have some April Fool's Day fun!
Thanks Angie, for inviting me to hop on your blog!!!

  4. I remember biting into cardboard on April Fool's Day as a kid. I cant remember if my mom put a layer of cardboard in the middle of a cake or if the cardboard was in the middle of a fluffy pancake... whichever it was, it was funny!

  5. UPDATE: So I took your ideas and first drew whiskers and his name on my younger sons face on April Fools Eve, my older son got heart stickers plastered all over his face!
Our dinner turned out great! We did the meatloaf cupcakes w/ pink "frosting" and the "peas" were a huge hit! Dont think my jello/drink fooled them much though!
Thanks for the great ideas, although now they are wanting to know what we are doing next year! Looks like I started something here......

  6. Something fun to add to the list is cottonball cupcakes. Cook cupcakes like you typically would. Pinch a part out of the top, put the cottonball in that hole. Then frost. This is such a funny prank, especially when people eat the whole thing and aren't even aware that they just ate a cottonball.
